Echinacea and Cold Prevention
For the Prevention and Treatment of Colds for AdultsEchinacea is one of the most commonly used herbal products, and overall, the Mayo Clinic rates the scientific evidence for its use as “Good” for the prevention and treatment of colds for adults. However, controversy still exists about its benefits for the prevention and treatment of the common cold. A 2006 meta-analysis investigating the efficacy of Echinacea found that the likelihood of experiencing a cold was 55% higher with placebo than with Echinacea. They also found that the duration of the colds were 1.5 day shorter, on average, when Echinacea was taken. However, more recent meta-analyses are conflicting. The problem seems to be due to the variation within the studies of the dosage amounts and the source of the Echinacea extracts.
Most consumers are not aware that products available under the term Echinacea differ appreciably in their composition, mainly due to the variable plant material, extraction methods, and the addition of other components. Even though the clinical debate for Echinacea continues, the current recommendation is to buy high quality Echinacea products made by reputable, established companies. For this reason, I recommend Forever Living Product’s Forever Echinacea Supreme, which contains two of most high quality forms of Echinacea, (Purpurea and Angustifolia), and is manufactured under strict quality control. This assures you of getting the best form of Echinacea for your health and the health of your family.
A common recommended dosing is 500 milligrams of Echinacea in capsule form taken by mouth two to three times daily for five to seven days to reduce the symptoms of a cold. For the cold prevention, use 300 to 800 milligrams of Echinacea two to three times daily for up to six months.
