Part 2: The Synergistic Benefits of Calcium and Magnesium
Similar to calcium, magnesium supports tooth and bone structure. According to the National Institute of Health, magnesium is required in over 300 of the body’s biochemical reactions. It also plays a role in muscle function, helps to regulate blood sugar, helps maintain blood pressure, and supports a steady heart rhythm. Low levels of magnesium may cause agitation, anxiety, sleep disorders, irritability, nausea, abnormal heart rhythms, low blood pressure, muscle spasms, hyperventilation, seizures, migraine, asthma, allergies, fibromyalgia, and nervous disorders.
Paired calcium and magnesium supplements are a powerful combination, working synergistically together. Magnesium is required for proper calcium absorption. Without enough magnesium, calcium accumulates in the soft tissues and causes certain types of arthritis; ironically when this happens, calcium is poorly absorbed into the bones. Taking more calcium only exacerbates the problem if there is a magnesium insufficiency.
Two hormones, calcitonin and parathyroid hormone are key regulators of calcium absorption. Calcitonin keeps calcium in our bones, while the parathyroid hormone pulls calcium out of the bones and deposits it in the soft tissues of the body. Magnesium suppresses the action of parathyroid hormone and stimulates calcitonin, which means, in simple terms, that magnesium moves calcium from soft tissues into the bones. Also, too much calcium interferes with the absorption of magnesium it is actually possible to create a magnesium deficiency by supplementing with too much calcium and not enough magnesium. Low magnesium levels can also be caused by too much coffee, soda, salt, alcohol, processed foods, excessive sweating, and prolonged stress.
